Burning, bending, discolouring metal and making a working battery out of yourself or a potato along the way. At Hemlab in Zaandam, children aged 7 to 14 spend two hours experimenting with iron, aluminium, copper, zinc and silver.
An interactive workshop for curious kids who love discovering how things work.
What will you do
Young researchers get to work with metals. Using your eyes, hands and electricity, you discover which materials are made of metal. You investigate what happens when you hold metal in fire: does it burn, change colour or bend? You make a battery from a potato – or from yourself – and find out whether you can power a light bulb or a calculator with it. To finish, you make a silver-mirrored tube from silver salt, ammonia and grape sugar.
Every participant works with a lab coat and safety goggles. A team of Hemlab specialists explains, guides and shares in the discoveries.
