Free activities for children in Amsterdam

24 March 2026 by Redactie
These are free activities for children in Amsterdam that truly work, tested and fun enough to make you stay longer than you planned.

Even if you decide to go out without a plan.

Sometimes you just want to do something. Get outside, explore the city, without having to plan or book anything.
Spontaneous moments that turn into great memories.

Amsterdam is full of free activities for children if you know where to look.

Is free also fun?

Yes, especially when you are in the mood to keep things simple.

These are the kinds of outings you can do without preparation. Stay for a while and leave when it feels right. No schedule, no hassle.

If you prefer something to plan ahead or spend more time on, you can always book other activities. But a free day out can be just as memorable.

Puppet Theatre at Dam Square

Every Sunday in the middle of the square

From May onwards, a traditional puppet show takes place every Sunday on Dam Square, right in front of the Royal Palace.
The first performance usually starts around 1 p.m., followed by a few more that afternoon.
Children sit on the ground, shout along and are completely absorbed in the story.
It is simple, a little rough around the edges, and that is exactly why it works.

For whom
Young children

Why it works
An iconic spot in the heart of the city and children are always fascinated by puppets.

Theater van Deyssel

The small theatre of Nieuw West

Theater van Deyssel is one of those places where you instantly feel at home.
It is small, calm and easy to take in. Children sit close to the stage, see everything clearly and usually get caught up in the show almost immediately.

The venue works together with De Krakeling, known for its excellent children’s theatre. Normally they perform in their own building, but now they also bring performances into the neighbourhood.
All shows are free, but you need to make a reservation.

For whom
Children aged about six and older

Why it works
Because it feels personal and different from a typical theatre visit

Tip
Check the agenda in advance. Smaller performances and projects often make places like this extra special.

Vondelpark Open Air Theatre

Not only watching but joining in

From May through September, something fun takes place every weekend at the Vondelpark Open Air Theatre.
Festival afternoons are especially good for children.

These afternoons are not just about watching a show. There are often workshops, games and small activities around the stage.
Children join in, wander around and then sit down again when something new starts.

Performances usually begin around 2 p.m. You can simply walk over and often end up staying longer than expected.

For whom
All ages

Beautiful location right in the park

OBA Amsterdam (Oosterdok Library)

Step inside and time flies by

The library near Central Station is the kind of place you walk into and end up staying longer than planned.

On the children’s floor there are regular story sessions, usually in the morning or early afternoon.
There is also the Makerspace where children can build, craft and explore technology.

If you just want a quiet moment, there is always a cosy corner with books where they can settle while you relax for a bit.

For whom
All ages

Why it works
A great location and plenty to keep them busy with books and activities

NEMO Rooftop Terrace

Free but it doesn’t feel like it

The rooftop terrace of NEMO Science Museum is free to visit and always worth it.

Children play with the water installations, run around and enjoy the space while you sit and take in the city view.
On sunny days it is the kind of place where you easily stay for hours.

For whom
Children from about four years old

Why it works
Lovely location with a great view over the city

Jeugdland Amsterdam

A place to visit for a moment and end up staying for hours

Jeugdland in Amsterdam East is not your standard playground.
It is a large outdoor area where children can build, climb, play with water and explore freely.

There is a hut village, a children’s workshop and plenty of open space. On Wednesdays there is often a nature club, and on Saturdays activities for younger children.

For whom
Children who love being outdoors and enjoy water, running, climbing and building

Why it works
They can play freely for hours and return home happily tired and a little messy

Experience Trail in the Amsterdamse Bos

In the Amsterdamse Bos you can walk the Experience Trail, a route where children climb, balance and complete small tasks.

Tree trunks, water and ropes make it more adventure than walk. Using your phone, you can scan the signs to start mini challenges and learn about nature on the way.

For whom
Children aged four to eight

Why it works
Outdoor, physical and interactive all at once

Cherry Blossom in the Amsterdamse Bos

Around late March and early April the cherry blossoms bloom near the Bosbaan.
Children run among the trees while you sit on a blanket and enjoy the view.

Tip Go early in the morning, as it can get very busy later in the day.

NDSM Wharf Treasure Hunt

The NDSM Wharf in Amsterdam North is a place where you can wander around freely and always find something new.
Huge murals, old warehouses and large open spaces invite children to explore and create their own adventure.

What makes it even more fun is the NDSM Treasure Hunt. Across the wharf you will find artworks and hidden spots that together tell a story. As you walk around you look for clues, complete tasks and solve riddles.

You can pick up the treasure hunt for free at Pllek, IJver or Noorderlicht. From there, follow the trail and explore the area.
At the end, solve the final puzzle and you might find a small surprise waiting for you.

Tip Take the ferry, it is an adventure in itself for children.

For whom
Children from about six years old

Why it works
Because exploring suddenly has a purpose while still feeling free

Fruittuin van West

Playing, discovering and getting a bit muddy is part of it

At the Fruittuin van West it is all about being outdoors.
Children run among the fruit trees, crawl through tunnels, balance on logs and find their way through the maze.

Getting dirty is part of the fun — mud, grass, sand, everything belongs here.

Among the play areas you will see chickens walking around, and sometimes you can even find warm freshly laid eggs.
It makes the visit feel different from a regular park afternoon.

For whom
Children who like to move, explore and are not afraid to get dirty

Why it works
A small farm feel close to the city

Tip
Stay a while at the garden café for a hot chocolate or something tasty to eat
