Most museums start with the end result. KiMu starts with the first idea. This children's art museum in Amsterdam-Noord is entirely focused on the creative process: what matters isn't what your child makes, but what happens while they're making it. The searching, trying, doubting and starting over. That is the art.

KiMu grew out of Kleinlab, a creative children's centre that has worked from the same conviction since 2012: children are fully-fledged makers. Not toddlers who get to do a bit of crafting, but real artists with their own ideas. And you see that reflected in everything: from the way the studios are set up to the attitude of the staff.

The Light Studio

One of the most beautiful spaces in the museum is the Light Studio, for children aged 3 to 15. Here you explore the natural phenomena of light: shadows, reflection, projection, mirroring, colour mixing and refraction. Not explained on a text panel, but experienced first-hand. Your child discovers what light does and what they themselves can do with it.

When they need a moment to catch their breath, there's a reading nook where you float in a net above the museum. Not something you forget in a hurry.

Now showing: Parallelle Processen

The current exhibition Parallelle Processen shows what happens when almost 70 children and three contemporary artists (Brian Elstak, Willem Harbers and Roos van Haaften) work side by side for months, without ever seeing each other's work. The result? No neat finished pieces, but sketches, doubts, experiments and new attempts. The real creative process, right there to see. The exhibition runs until mid-January 2027.
